St. Valentine's day
St. Valentine's Day is an annual festival to celebrate love, friendship and admiration. Every year on 14th February people celebrate this day by sending messages of love and affection to partners, family and friends. Many people want to express their love through Valentine's Day cards, chocolates, jewellery or flowers and spend special time together to honour their love for each other.
Valentine's Day is most commonly associated with romantic love. In some parts of the world, this is observed as a day for expressing love between family members and friends, rather than that of romantic couples. Marriage proposals are also popular on Valentine's Day, and it is often chosen as the perfect day to express their love and commitment.
Valentine's Day becomes associated with love and romance in the 14th century. The poet Chaucer in the Middle Ages was the first to link St. Valentine with romantic love. Saint Valentine was a Catholic priest who lived in Rome in the 3rd century. Emperor Claudius II was passed a law preventing soldiers from marrying. St Valentine believed in the importance of love and began to marry these soldiers in secret Christian ceremony. Legend has it that while imprisoned, Valentine cured his jailor's daughter’s blindness and before being executed he wrote her a love message signed "from your Valentine"; that is still in use today. Valentine was executed on 14 February in the year 270. Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine all of whom were martyred.
The practice of sending love messages developed into people sending special handmade cards decorated with pictures of cupid, hearts and flowers expressing their affection. These images are still used today to symbolise love and are recognised all over the world. The feeling of romance symbolized with hearts, Red and Pink colours, roses, images and statues of Cupids on Valentine’s Day.
